Authenticated security scanning: preparing a test account

Authenticated scanning uses a dedicated test account to explore pages that require a login. It can improve coverage beyond public pages, but reaching the right pages depends on the login flow, account permissions and session behavior.

Use a dedicated account and controlled data

Create an account specifically for the assessment and confirm that its permissions match the authorized role. Use controlled test data in a test environment. Define the environment, exclusions and operational limits before starting the assessment.

Check that authentication actually works

Configure the credentials supported by the platform and verify that the scan reaches authenticated pages. A completed scan does not by itself prove that login succeeded. Multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, expiring sessions and anti-automation controls can affect reachability.

Treat each role as a separate coverage question

A customer account and an administrator account do not expose the same functionality. Document which role was tested and which roles remain outside scope. Review authorization-sensitive workflows manually when an automated assessment does not provide enough evidence.

Review results and retire test access

Inspect the findings together with coverage limits. Correct the application, retest the affected behavior and review the new evidence. Rotate or revoke temporary test credentials when the assessment is finished, following your organization’s access policy.
